Goldilocks and the Three Bears...and Power Protection

We all know the value of antivirus software and not leaving a laptop unattended at a coffee shop, but how often is the value of clean power considered?

For many small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), thoughts of electrical power usually don’t extend beyond the price of consumption, or at the very most, the need for backup power; however, every business needs clean power, because at the end of the day, fluctuations in power can subtly wreak havoc on computer systems – the lifeblood modern life.

“Even minor power glitches that may go unnoticed can cause data corruption and severe damage to valuable electronic equipment,” noted Bill Allen, marketing director for Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert), in an interview for Security Today. “An uninterruptible power supply serves as an ‘electrical firewall,’ preventing catastrophic damage from blackouts, brownouts, surges and spikes.”

The “electrical firewall” for SMBs offered by Minuteman goes unmatched in its Minuteman PRO-RT uninterruptible power supply (UPS), available either as a rack-mount or a tower.

The PRO-RT comes in two sizes, 1000VA (1PRO1000RT) and 1500VA (PRO1500RT) models, featuring an LCD display that shows power status, battery run-time based on load and operational mode. Communication between the UPS and a computer can happen through the unit’s USB or RS-232 port, and no special driver is needed. A three-year warranty and $100,000 Minuteman Platinum Protection Plan is also available.

Each PRO-RT can be managed on a network using an optional SNMP card that can be installed in the unit.

Not only does the PRO-RT provide backup power, but it also line-conditions so that the power going into the business’ critical computer systems is clean from electrical overages or underages, spikes and other electrical disturbances. And best yet, the unit does this while avoiding phantom power issues.

“The voltage regulation circuitry is automatically bypassed until needed, reducing vampire power consumption,” Allen explained. “Other power-saving features can be tapped into by using Minuteman’s SentryPlus software to schedule automatic shut down and re-start of equipment during nights and weekends when many devices sit idle yet continue to consume energy resources.”

Further, the SentryPlus software comes free with each PRO-RT unit, and the UPS is also RoHS compliant for added environmental safety.

Finding the perfect power protection solution can be likened to the age-old children’s fable “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” A hungry Goldilocks comes across three bowls of porridge, one of which is too hot, one of which is too cold and the last one which is just right. Similarly, she comes across three chairs, one which is too big, one which is too small and the last one which fit just right.

Similarly, “The PRO-RT is a perfect fit for small- and medium-sized businesses that are looking for the best power protection for their vital systems and facing a tight budget,” noted Allen (Except you won’t have to face three angry bears in the end).

He added: “When damage to expensive equipment does occur from these types of anomalies, it is generally not covered under a manufacturer’s warranty. Because of this, a UPS is an essential component for protecting any type of mission critical electronic equipment.”
