Colleges Students Rejoice as Power Protection Strategy Fails at Various UW-Madison Facilities

Last week, right around the time that multiple power outages were negatively affecting power protection specialist Minuteman UPS/ Para Systems (News - Alert), colleges students were probably somewhere celebrating by playing beer pong as IT administrators did their best to bring back the electricity that had gone done within seven buildings at the UW-Madison campus.

While the outage was apparently caused by switch gear equipment calling it kaput, there was absolutely no power starting at around 2 p.m. at the following locations: Chamberlin Hall, Van Hise Hall, Science Hall, the Bradley Memorial Building, the Service Building, the Service Annex, and half of Sterling Hall.

In spite of the fact that most of the buildings were back up and running by 4:30 p.m., a mere two and half hours after the initial outage, the Bradley Memorial Building was kept in the dark for a 48- hour period.

It might be surprising to hear that even large institutions of higher learning like this campus are still prone to various power problems that occur due to spikes, surges, brownouts and even blackouts. To prevent these problems from occurring and in essence safeguard each and every classroom and dormitory, colleges and universities alike are increasingly turning to Minuteman’s product line.

“It has the tools you need to protect your entire campus. This includes surge suppressors for non-critical components, standby EnSpire series and line interactive Entrust (News - Alert), PRO-E, PRO-RT, and EnterprisePlus series UPSs for small- to medium-sized network and security devices, and full on-line Endeavor UPSs for enterprise-wide systems requiring multiple hours of runtime, the company’s website revealed.

Taking a closer look at the EnSpire product suite users can see that it  offers access to a cost-effective, high-performance UPS line that packs the punch and capabilities needed to ensure all the equipment needed for both learning and teaching work successfully at all times. The EN400 and EN600 units each encompass six outlets, while three boast battery support and spike and surge protection and the other half only contain features related directly to spike and surge protection. Also, it comes with USB communications, single line phone/fax/modern protection, Minuteman support and a three-year parts and labor warranty. The battery is covered by a two-year warranty as well.

As you can see, the smallest size company all the way up to the largest corporation and university can find itself scrambling to restore power when an intuitive power protection strategy is not put in place.  Don’t allow yourself or your staff to get left in the dark, instead rethink your power protection plan before it’s too late!
