'Tis the Season for Power Outages

We tend to take for granted such vital infrastructure and services as roads, bridges, phone and Internet connectivity, and power. So even though we know they will sometimes become bottlenecked, slow down, or become completely unavailable to us, it usually seems to come as an unpleasant surprise.

But the arrival of certain times of year can remind us of the importance of shoring up the infrastructure and personnel related to such services.

For example, the phone companies know that calling on their networks skyrockets over Mother’s Day weekend. So they put the proper resources in place to address those surges.

Internet service providers learned from the first Victoria’s Secret fashion show, which was also presented online, that this event would generate a lot of traffic. So the ISPs now optimize their networks to support heavy traffic loads during such events.

And businesses and energy companies by now know that as temperatures rise, construction in most parts of the country ramps up. As a result, power outages become more common, as backhoes accidentally sever lines and other mistakes interrupt energy delivery. So they can prepare for that by installing power protection solutions.

Backup power solutions can keep a business up and running even when the energy company is experiencing an outage. Keeping the power is especially important for businesses today. Of course, businesses rely on power for their climate control, lighting, and manufacturing and office equipment. But they also need it to keep their computer, point of sale, and surveillance and other connected devices and systems up and running.

Even some home owners are now putting backup power systems in place. For example, the HGTV Smart Home has a backup power generator to ensure the homeowners will always have the energy they need to use their computers, and also to manage and turn on and off their lighting, their TVs, their security system, and more via a smart home control app.
